Welcome to Small Animal Rescue

The Small Animal Rescue Society of BC is a registered society run by volunteers. Our primary focus is to rescue and rehome small animals in need. Neglected, injured and abandoned animals are our main priority.

Small Animal Rescue works to provide a safe haven for small animals in need while promoting responsible pet guardianship through education, advocacy, and spay/neuter initiatives.

Dangers of Craigslist…..

May 26th, 2011

We literally shudder when people tell us they are trying to find their pets a new home on Craigslist – This is why….PLEASE always do a home check/visit for any animal you are placing.

Beware of the Dangers of Using Craig’s List – from an email newsletter I receive:

Last week, Pasado’s Safe Haven received a chilling telephone call: two teenagers had thrown a cat from a car…

That act alone was horrible, but what we learned as the story unraveled was unfathomable.

The teenagers had responded to a Craigslist advertisement placed by a woman who was unable to continue caring for her three cats and needed assistance taking them to a shelter.

Crying as she bid farewell to her cats, she offered the teenagers $15 to take each cat and $15 to offset the cost of gasoline. The teenagers took the cats and the money. Once they were out of sight, they tossed one of the cats from the car. When the cat was too afraid to go into the underbrush, one of the teenagers kicked her until she limped away.

Fortunately, the twelve-year-old sister of one of the teenagers was in the car. Realizing how wrong her brother’s actions were, she told her mother what had happened. Her mother called the police, bravely reporting her own stepson. The cats were quickly located and the injured cat was rushed an emergency clinic by a Pasado’s staff member to get her the critical care she needed.  Though she was traumatized, the little cat named Abbey is recovering at Pasado’s and her outlook is good. She is hoping to find her forever family.   Please click here if you are interested in meeting Abbey.

The other two cats are with the little girl and her mother. While there was insufficient evidence to prosecute the boy for animal cruelty, Pasado’s is thrilled that his heroic sister and mother had the courage and integrity to speak up on their behalf. The boys who killed Pasado the donkey went on to commit other crimes and it is imperative to address disturbing behavior early on. While this sad story has a happy ending, there is always a risk with putting a pet on Craigslist. Some people purchase pets for vivisection or dog fighting. There are always alternatives – and Pasado’s strives to be a part of the solution.

As a community, we can stand together and let abusers know that animal cruelty is a crime. We cannot – and will not – tolerate it in our neighborhoods. When brave citizens have the courage to report animal cruelty, Pasado’s Safe Haven is there to answer the call. We are committed to the fight against animal cruelty, but we need your help now more than ever to continue our life-saving work.  Please click here and  make a donation today. Thanks to the support of readers like you, Pasado’s can continue to make a difference, one life at a time.

Attention gardeners…..our bunnies have been working hard

May 26th, 2011

For many, many months in preparation of the gardening season, the SARS BC bunnies have been working hard producing our exclusive line of Rabbit Tea.

Rabbit Tea???  Not for you to drink silly…..it’s tea for your garden

Did you know that rabbit fertilizer is one of the best fertilizers available?  It is high in nitrogen, is clean and doesn’t smell.  Our rabbits were adamant that if they had to work to earn their keep, they wanted to do something that would be true to their values.  As vegetarians, they are also eco-activists and believe in going green.   We agreed whole heartedly and decided to help them in their plans to be a Zero-waste Rescue.

With that said, we’d like to introduce the Amazing Rabbit Tea.  For $2 you can buy 2 pounds of fertilizer to feed your garden, indoors or outdoors. Please email RabbitTeaSARS@gmail.com for more info.

My friends need help.

A couple of days ago, we were contacted by a fellow rescuer about 6 guinea pigs they recently trapped.  Believe it or not someone dumped 6 guinea pigs out into the bush in Port Coquitlam…..or at least we hope it was just 6 as that is all that they could find.

We think it may be a breeder getting rid of their stock as they are all males of various ages……and where are the females?

Needless to say all are a bit frightened but friendly.   They have been treated for mites and will  be visiting our vet to have a few other issues checked.  Once that is done and they are settled, they will be looking for a forever home….this time they ask us to stress the *forever* part.  Like them, we agree…..being set loose in a forest to fend for themselves is no place for a guinea pig to be.

Until then, they are dreaming of  Home *wheet, wheet* Home ;-)

Dear Santa

December 22nd, 2010

....spell check & then hit send

Dear Santa,

I have a lot to ask of you , not for me, but for all of my friends that really need your help.  Actually, my ask is more of a wish…..

I wish that all of my furry friends could have a forever home.

Over the past few weeks, I have seen so many of my friends being left behind in an empty apartment when their people have moved away.  I don’t understand this because how are they to survive?  They are left in a cage and cannot find food and water for themselves.  All of their furniture & belongings are gone….did they forget their pets?  Sadly, I only know of the ones who were lucky enough to have been found before they died…..for some others, they were not so lucky.

I also wish that people would be brave enough to take their animals that they no longer want to a place where they will be safe.  Again, many of my friends have been left taped up in boxes on the door step in the middle of the night or else when they thought no one was looking.  Thankfully they almost all survived.  Apparently there were 7 rabbits that came in this way but one didn’t make it.

Why are people so cruel to my friends?  Why do they agree to take us and then abandon us when we are no longer wanted?  What did we do?  Do you think you can help?  We have been very good this year and are hoping for a Christmas miracle for all of our furry friends….I know miracles are hard to come by but we can only hope.

1,500 Thank You’s

December 22nd, 2010

Something to celebrate!!

SARS BC recently hit the milestone of 1,500 animals finding their adoptive homes.

Compared to a lot of other agencies, this number may be small, and perhaps it is, but to us it really is something that all of our volunteers can be proud of.

SARS BC is 100% volunteer run and each volunteer has their own animals, job, family and personal life on top of what they do for SARS.  Everyone of the 1,500 animals has had multiple people working for them behind the scenes, so each small success is indeed, a success for all those involved.  Volunteers are busy with picking up, trapping, rescuing, transporting, grooming, feeding, cleaning, vetting, socializing, doing home visits, promoting, fundraising and anything else that comes their way in order to help the animal in need.

Looking back over the past 5 years, there has been happiness, joy, sadness and heartache.  Sometimes it is overwhelming to look at all the animals still needing help and those still awaiting their own forever home however we must not loose sight of the fact that 1,500 have found homes…..1,500 rabbits, guinea pigs, mice, rats, degus, chinchillas, birds, hamsters, gerbils and hedgehogs.

It’s a nice way to close the year and we look forward to the new year…..you never know what it might bring….it always keeps up hopping ;-)

Pot o’bronze

December 22nd, 2010

All that glitters is bronze

SARS  BC would to thank my co-workers for donating their pennies and other spare change to the small animals at this years Christmas celebration.

Special thanks go to Paul & Victoria for making the load to the car *extra heavy*.

All in all it was about 3 inches deep and  contained over 5,000 pennies.    For us it’s bronze, not gold that lies at the end of the rainbow :)
