Homeless for the Holidays

Friday, December 17th, 2010

Unfortunatley the holiday season is not so festive for many small animals.

Everyday our phone has been ringing off the hook with people no longer wanting their animals.

People are moving into places where they cannot take their pet, their kids are no longer interested and some even resorted to leaving them in a taped up box and running away.  7 rabbits have been dumped this way in the past 2 weeks.

Homes for these little ones are just as important and needed as they are for yourself.  They want to be part of the family.
There is nothing like Home for the Holidays.

Or is it that people are too busy with their own holiday activities to provide care, warmth & happiness to your pet….or have they become an inconvenience?  People want to go on a holiday and animals simply get in the way.

We’re not sure the real reason, as most people will tell you what they think you want to hear.  We just know it’s very sad and a really rotten way to see the new year.  Maybe 2011 will be a kinder, gentler, year?  We can only hope.

Nothing to laugh about however, this You Tube clip does make light of the things we and all shelters, go through regardless if it is a cat, a dog, a rabbit, a guinea pig, a hamster.

Sammy the Rescue Bunny book now available!

Thursday, November 18th, 2010

Just in time for Christmas, we have a wonderful book by Theo Dombrowski about ‘Sammy the Rescue Bunny’. In this book, for ages 4 to 10, two children rescue a terrified bunny, come to love him, and beg their parents to be allowed to keep him. Through narrative and artwork, the book introduces ideas of responsibility and care.

Makes a fabulous gift for kids!

We need YOUR help….you can make a HUGE difference for the animals.

RIP Dontknowim

May you suffer no more

Dontknowim was a bunny that came to us through a local shelter that was in need of specialized medical attention by a  rabbit savvy vet.  The shelter asked if we could help and Dontknowim was taken to our vet straight away.

Dontknowim was a stray.  He was found in a local park and had terrible facial abscesses, malaligned & over grown teeth.  If he was not found when he was, he would have died of starvation…unable to eat.  At our vets  he had surgery to clean the abscesses and make him more comfortable.  During the surgery however he began to have problems while under, so his teeth would have to be done at a later date.  Despite this initial hiccup, post surgery, he was doing well, eating and healing.

Today however, he took a turn for the worse and he was no longer doing well.  Sadly, it was decided by all that the kindest thing to do would be to help him move onto a better place, a place where he no longer had to suffer.

We never had a chance to meet  Dontknowim…he went right to our vet.  We never had the chance to find him a proper name based on his personality.  We never had the chance to spoil him, let him find a bunny friend or a new forever home.  He never had the chance……

None of these good things would be for Dontknowim.  The name we gave him is a bit odd but we never want any animal to die without a name so this one seemed suitable.  We are angry at the person that neglected him, ignored his suffering and then dumped him to die.

It is frustrating and sad to know that you could do nothing more to help this little one but to let him move onto a place where he can be pain free and whole again.  RIP little fella and we are sorry that we could not do more for you.

Please, if you cannot keep your pet – be responsible and have the guts to take him somewhere safe.  Setting your pet loose only results ina  cruel, slow and painful death.

The truth be told

A pet is for LIFE

Giving up your unwanted pet to a local shelter or rescue group because YOU can no longer give them the time and attention they need is not a solution.

Rescues groups and shelters are already over loaded with abandonded and unwanted animals….most, if not all, are staffed by volunteers who work full time, have families of their own and are stretched thin caring for and fundraising for their many abandonded foster animals.

So TRUTH BE TOLD……your animal will not get more love, will not get more one on one attention, will not get more time out to play, will not have acres & acres of space to run and be free, will not get more of what you can no longer give.

Truth be told, if you can’t commit to an animal for their entire life span, DO NOT get a pet.  Don’t get one for your child and then when they become bored of it, give it away……that is not teaching responsibility or respect for life.  It is teaching that animals are disposable and that is wrong.

Cleo Boyd

RIP Cleo

In Memory of Cleo Boyd.

Cleo was one of the first few bunnies that we took in, back before SARS BC officially started…we were still BC Rabbit Rescue at that time.  Both Cleo and his brother were given up by their previous owners due to allergies but happily, they were both very lucky and each found wonderful new homes.

Cleo was very lucky as his new mom adopted 2 more spayed female bunnies from us to live with him.  So needless to say, Cleo was one happy bunny with his own personal harem.

It is with great sadness to say that Cleo Boyd recently passed away….it was his time and he went quickly and quietly….he wasn’t sick or injured…..it was just time for him to move on.

As a special tribute to him, his adoptive mom and dad both made generous donations to our group so that other bunnies can find as much happines as he did.  He will be missed greatly and always loved.
